Born in Savannah, Georgia on March 25, 1925, the infant O’Connor was baptized on Easter afternoon, April 12th. Named Mary Flannery after the wife of a Civil War hero, Captain John Flannery, O’Connor grew up in a devout Irish Catholic family at a time when the “War Between the States” was still in living memory of many Southerners.
