“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” -Romans 12:12
Paul’s list for the family of God continues with an exhortation for living in the present circumstances. One day, the redeemed of God will be saved not only from the penalty and power of sin, but from the very presence of sin. But until then, we must run our race here on earth with patience (Cf. Hebrews 12:1-2). When the fullness of the kingdom is revealed, there will be no more suffering or tribulation. But for now, we must endure cheerfully.
Therefore, Paul exhorts the believers at the church in Rome to rejoice in hope, that is to remain in a state of mental well-being and happiness because of our expectation. In other words, we have a future, a good future, regardless of the present circumstance. Secondly, believers are to be patient (steadfast in our rejoicing) in the face of tribulation—and there will be tribulation (John 16:33 Cf. 2 Timothy 3:12). Finally, believers are to be constant in prayer, which is the same thing as saying “Pray without ceasing” (Cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:17).
While there are three different emphases, it is all one thing Paul is exhorting the church to do: be cheerfully and prayerfully hopeful amidst tribulations in front of a despairing broken world.
