“Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.” -Romans 12:17
Paul further exhorts believers that they are not vindictive for wrongs suffered but instead think about the best way to respond in such a way that unbelievers, those outside the church, and even the persecutors, will have no legitimate reason to disapprove. Paul tells Timothy something similar in his pastoral epistle to him, as does Peter in his general epistle to believers.
“So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.” -1 Timothy 5:14
“But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.” -1 Peter 3:14–16
As Paul will declare shortly, vengeance belongs to God, not to us. We are called to love even our enemies, and persecutors.
